Trained as an appellate attorney, Bonjean possesses exceptional writing, analytical, and arguing skills. These traits combined with her innate style in the courtroom make Bonjean a powerful force.
Bonjean attended Loyola University Chicago School of Law from where she graduated cum laude in 1999. Bonjean began her career working as an appellate defender in the Illinois Appellate Defender's Office where she handled over 100 appeals involving serious felonies. Bonjean specializes in appellate, post-conviction, and habeas corpus litigation.
Bonjean is a member of the New York and Illinois bars. She has been admitted to practice in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, and the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York. She has appeared multiple times before the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals and is admitted to the Supreme Court of the United States.
In addition to her appellate expertise, Bonjean is a skilled trial litigator. She has handled a broad range of cases, including murder, armed robbery, drug and gun offenses, conspiracy, and white-collar financial crimes. Armed with an impressive understanding of constitutional jurisprudence, Bonjean is known for her pre-trial litigation skills and creative approach to trying cases.
Bonjean is perhaps best known for her work in exonerating the wrongly convicted. Through the collateral appeals process, she has worked tirelessly to reverse the convictions of innocent people incarcerated for crimes they did not commit. Bonjean has demonstrated a commitment to exposing the rampant police and prosecutorial misconduct that often leads to wrongful convictions. Her recent successes in this area include obtaining the reversal of her client's triple homicide conviction from 1988 after he had spent 20 years incarcerated unjustly.
Although weaned on criminal defense, Bonjean now focuses much of her attention to civil rights work with a focus on police and prison misconduct suits. Through aggressive litigation, Bonjean aims to expose the systematic corruption in certain police departments and vindicate her injured clients by securing substantial settlements or verdicts in their favor.
Bonjean is a regular guest on FOX News, CNN, and Court TV. She resides in Manhattan with her four children.
